I'm about as far from being a military expert as it's possible to be, but it seems like now, today, would be the perfect time for Israel to hit Iran's nuclear sites. There will almost certainly never be another moment when the Iranian government has its hands so very full, trying to keep protesters in check, and be less able to strike back. If they do strike back, the military distraction that attacking Israel (and U.S. targets in the region?) would create would provide an opening for the protesters, increasing the possibility that they might actually accomplish something.
I haven't had the TV on today, so don't know if the news media are covering the Iranian protests or not. There is, however, a YouTube channel dedicated to video clips from Iran - you can access it here. There are dozens of clips - obviously the Iranian people are doing the best they can to document the happenings, which can't be easy, given that the mullahs have shut down almost every form of communication within the nation.
Haaretz is now reporting that Mousavi (Ahmadi-Nejad's main rival) has been arrested. There are also unofficial reports that there are tanks in the streets of Tehran as protesters set fires and break shop windows. This is the best chance the Iranian people have had since 1979 of overthowing their government - it's just a damned shame that we have a pacifist in the White House who won't help their effort - it's the absolute best option for stopping Iran. With our help and an Israeli strike on their nuclear sites, it's difficult to imagine the dictators being able to battle it all back.
Hundreds of people have reportedly died since these protests began. If their effort is unsuccessful, many of their best will have fallen, and the odds of inciting another revolution will be greatly reduced. Carpe diem, world...there will never be a better opening.
Update: Pajamas Media has ongoing coverage here.
