Senator Nick Thompson and his wife have offered Hughes a home after hearing her story at the town hall.
The house, in Fort Denaud near LaBelle, was Chene Thompson's former residence when she worked for the State Attorney's Office in LaBelle. They're offering the home rent-free for as long as Hughes needs it.
"Basically, I offered Ms. Hughes and her son the opportunity to stay in my home rent free, for as long as they need to," said Chene Thompson. "I'm not a millionaire, I'm not rich, but this is what I can do for someone if they need it."
It's a 3-bedroom 2-bath house on three acres of land. It has been vacant for more than a year.
"We're American. That's what we're supposed to do for each other. We're supposed to help each other. So if I can help her, I will," said Thompson.
Hughes is expected to look at the house for the first time in the next few days.
A Cape Coral man even purchased the web domain henriettahughes.com and is considering starting a charity page.
You can read the rest here. This is how Americans used to handle problems - whatever we had, we shared. Perhaps, were we not now so over-burdened with taxes, we could still afford to do the same.
