Global Popularity Contest Status Update

How's that winning friends and influencing global tyrants thing working out? Let's take a look around...

Iran

On Wednesday we learned that Congressional investigators report that Iran's nuclear program is more advanced than previously thought. And last weekend, they launched airstrikes on three villages in Iraq. But according to the White House, Israel just needs to make peace with the Palestinians and all will be well. No worries.

Venezuela

Hugo Chavez, he of the warm smile and friendly handshake, has sent troops to take over companies that provide services for the oil industry, including two U.S. owned gas facilities, calling it a "revolutionary offensive." The companies are owed billions by Venezuela's state-owned oil company PDVSA, which can't pay since oil prices dropped. Obviously the only solution is simply to seize control of the creditors, right? Again...no worries.

Soviet Union Russia

The dynamic duo, Putin and Medvedev, staged a Soviet style military parade/show of force in Red Square today, complete with nuclear weapons. This would seem a bit unnecessary, given our recent agreement to overcharge overstress reset relations between our two countries. Perhaps it has something to do with friction over alleged spies and the Georgia conflict?

China

We discussed their military buildup a few days ago.

Cuba

Recent moves to soften our icy relations with Cuba are creating an economic boom for the communist island nation. Surely they'll be so happy with their new found status on the world stage that they will allow their people to actually have lives? Maybe not so much.

Curious that things aren't looking up in international relations, given the president's recent global apology tours and consistent willingness to embrace those who hate us most. Perhaps, like sharks who can smell blood from a quarter mile away, these rogue leaders smell weakness and are moving to take advantage of a clueless administration. Nah. I'm sure that's not it. They'll all come around...we just need to give them more time. No worries.
