I know it's all over the news, and there's really no need to link here, but I just had to comment on the brilliant rescue of Captain Richard Phillips by the Navy Seals.
It's kind of a microcosm of foreign policy in general. Here was a situation that could have been resolved in a number of ways - negotiations, paying ransom, storming the lifeboat and risking the life of the hostage, etc. We spent days playing games with these thugs. Listening to their demands, allowing them to broadcast to the world that they "aren't afraid of the Americans," and otherwise flex their virtually non-existent muscles.
Finally, we say enough is enough. Take them out. And before you can say "Ahmadi-Nejad is a flaming lunatic," it's a done deal. Three dead bad guys, one free captain.
This is a perfect example of what is possible when we allow our military to do the job they were trained to do. Someday we'll get sick of playing similar games with Iran and teach them a very valuable lesson about playing with fire.
I know this pirate thing isn't over, and will likely get a lot bloodier before all is said and done. But if this nation cannot stand on the side of all that is right and just, and against tyranny in any form, because somebody might get hurt, then we've reached the point where there is simply no semblance of "America" left in America.
